Deep in the Heart of Russian lie four villages - Palekh, Kholui, Fedoskino and Mstiora. Here dedicated artists paint exquisite miniatures capturing the essence of old Russia in fairy tales and legends, portraits, and scenes from village life. The art has its roots in icon painting but is creative and ever;evolving. Miniatures are painted in tempera or oils on papier mache boxes, brooches and plaques which are finely ornamented in gold and lacquered to finish.
Artists study for five years to master this technique and their work represents some of the finest miniature painting in the world today!
